BLOG Founders Resign from DPRG, AUG 28, 2008

Blog founders, John Shepherd and Ted Mercer have decided not to renew their DPRG memberships for 2009 to protest the lack of leadership from DPRG in the fight against against the developer.

Their letters of resignation may be seen by clicking on the item, DPRG RESIGNATIONS, on the right below.

A Not-S0-Grand Finale, June 27,2008

We regret to report that at the Community Council Meeting on June 10th, our Councillor Walker made a motion to approve the Planner’s Final Report, with only minor amendments. His motion passed unanimously, without debate. As soon as City Council has rubber-stamped the report, the Developer will be free to proceed to construct that 37-floor, high density monstrosity that will tower over our neighbourhood and bring even more congestion onto our streets. Soon, the quiet residential nature of our neighbourhood will be only a memory.
We understand that our Councillor does not intend to run for office again.

After the Developer’s architect made his presentation, about six residents addressed Council.

We were disappointed to hear the Deer Park Residents’ Group (DPRG) president lead off, speaking generally in favour of the project, with only minor reservations, mostly to do with setbacks at street level on Yonge Street. Not surprisingly, these were incorporated in the Councillor’s amendments. It was difficult to tell whether the president was expressing her personal views, or those ostensibly reached through consultation with DPRG members. As you are aware, the DPRG Executive did not call a residents’ meeting to get residents’ opinions, in spite of this being the largest project ever proposed for our Deer Park neighbourhood, nor had it told the membership what was to be the content of the president’s deputation.

Four of the residents stated emphatically that the project’s height and density were excessive. Clear evidence was presented to show how skewed was the density, as proposed by the Developer and accepted without question by the Planner. There was no discussion among Council members about any of the deputations, written or verbal. In fact, Council spent much more time on an earlier agenda item, debating about the renewal of a hot dog vendor’s license.

For the record, Ted Mercer’s deputation can be accessed at www.eternalchaos.com/alvinblog/SubmissiontoCommunityCouncil.pdf
and John Shepherd’s at

with his speaking notes at

www.eternalchaos.com/alvinblog/WittingtonDeputtaion1.pdf.

The spreadsheet showing our height and density survey, which was ignored completely, can be accessed at www.eternalchaos.com/alvinblog/30AlvinDensityStudy.pdf.

The saying goes – “Nothing tried, nothing gained”. But we regret to report that our deputations were an absolute waste of time. We were not even able to get the Council to require that the future builder be restricted to the use of the Yonge Street entrance to the site for his dump trucks and ready-mix concrete trucks.

We don’t expect to see much activity on this blog until construction issues start to become an irritant or more.

Project Update, May 10.2008

What is the DPRG Executive’s current position on this project?

Our last posting on Feb. 26th asked “What is the position of the Deer Park Residents’ Group?” We have seen no response from the DPRG Executive, other than the statement in the 2008 Spring News.

The DPRG President reports that, during the past year, DPRG has been busy “initiating, organizing and participating in a working committee for 30 Alvin”. But it would appear to have formed no conclusions from the work of the Group. In our opinion, the DPRG Executive should have called a joint meeting of the Working Group, which it initiated, in order to address and record the differing opinions that were still outstanding within the Group at the end of its meetings with the Developer. Next should have followed a report to the membership and a meeting to get the DPRG members’ input. As matters stand, we will be attending Councillor Walker’s meeting with no knowledge of the Executive’s opinion of the merits of the project and. of course, no guidance. Yet we are being told to show up and be heard.

DPRG has encouraged Neighbourhood residents to make their views on the Developers proposal known to the City Planner. A number have done so. As far as we know however, the DPRG Executive has made no recommendations to the City on what is likely the largest project ever proposed for Deer Park. If indeed a report was presented to the City, it should have been made public. You will recall that DPRG was founded 50 years ago “to stop inappropriate development…” Could it be that the Executive believes this project to be entirely appropriate in its current form?

As quickly as we can after we see the Planner’s Final report, we will post our Report #3, to address its content. It will be added to the “Reports on Proposal to Residents” section on the bottom right hand side of the blog.

Please remember that the section entitled “Residents’ Comments on the Project” is provided to permit readers to add their own comments.

What is the Position of the DPRG? Feb 26, 2008

By now, most of us have received in the mail an attractive card from the DPRG soliciting a $25 membership fee for 2008. The card states that the Group was founded 50 years ago “to stop inappropriate development…”

The card further states that with up to 500 residential units in the 30 Alvin Project, the “potential impact of this development on traffic is huge”. It goes on to say that “a working group of your neighbours has been meeting with the Developers and the City to improve the initial proposal”. We were pleased to see that the URL of this blog is provided as one place to get more information. Note that the blog is independent of the DPRG.

Now that we have seen the Developer’s final submission to the City, our questions to the DPRG are: Is this “appropriate development”?; What is the DRPG’s position on this Project?; When may we expect a report from the DPRG that states its position?; We will post any DPRG report or response as soon as it is received.

Our position, as stated elsewhere on this blog (see Reports on Proposal to Residents, Reports # 1 and #2), is that the height and density of the Project are still much too large. The DPRG membership renewal card is strangely silent about this. What is the DPRG’s position?

Are we being asked to renew membership simply in order to continue to receive passive information that does not address the issues? Is DPRG, through its Executive, not going to lead the community?

Status Dec 11, 2007

The Applicant/Developer, a subsidiary of Wittington Properties Limited, has made official application to the City of Toronto to construct a large condominium development in the area that is presently the parking lot at Alvin and St. Clair. The proposal is now being studied by the City Planning Department.

A Chronology and a Report prepared by some of the residents, who were part of the Working Group that met with the City Planner and the Developer, are available on the right. Should the Applicant present new proposals to the City, the Report will be updated. Also on the right is a section titled Deer Park Residents Group Information. It will contain information received from the DPRG Executive. Other letters and documents, relating to the Development are also posted here.

All are in pdf format and may be downloaded. You will require Adobe Reader which may be downloaded free from the Adobe website.
